What is your success costing you?

Think about the last three months—not your intentions or your hardest day. Which practices actually hold when the business is under pressure?

Use 1 for a practice not in place, 3 for one that is inconsistent, and 5 for one that reliably holds. If you have no employees, consider contractors, collaborators, or people who support the work. If a statement has not been tested, choose the closest description of what is in place—not a prediction. You can leave without submitting; no explanation is required.

1. I can show, from current records, what revenue must cover before money is available to pay me.

2. I know exactly what “enough” looks like financially, including essential household needs and business obligations.

3. Before taking money out, I check cash needed for tax provisions, agreed payments, and reserves—not just the bank balance.

Success & personal cost

4. I measure success using at least one condition of my life or relationships, not revenue alone.

5. When growth costs health or relationships, I name the cost and change a commitment rather than calling it temporary indefinitely.

6. I can name a sacrifice I have declined or renegotiated because it would violate what I want the business to support.

Time & absence

7. I can take a day away without the business punishing me for it through avoidable backlog, missed obligations, or constant calls.

8. A named person or documented process can handle essential work when I am unavailable.

9. I have periods off duty when I am not also monitoring messages or waiting for the next problem.

People & relationships

10. The people who work for me can tell me the truth without fear of losing work, pay, or my goodwill.

11. The people who depend on my business receive reliable pay or payment and enough notice to plan around commitments.

12. My closest relationships receive more than what is left of me after work.

Integrity & contribution

13. I would still respect how my business operates if its private decisions were public.

14. Before giving publicly, I check that the business meets its obligations and does not rely on hidden unpaid labor or unfair treatment.

15. When a profitable choice conflicts with my stated values, I examine alternatives and record who would bear the cost.
